Recently I've obtained a Netgear wireless router. As it's a spare I'm going to install OpenWRT on it. I'm not going to use it as my main router and so I want to use another router for my internet access. After plugging the new router in and trying to connect to the internet, I realised that Windows favoured the new router over the old wireless connection for some reason.
After a bit of searching I found out that it might be something to do with the 'metric' or the connections. The lower the metric, the greater precedence the connection has over the others. Typing in route print
into the command prompt gave me the following:
I've highlighted the two lines of importance, also note that the second router has a different subnet from the original router. As you may notice, the new router (192.168.1.1) has a much lower metric, and is being used my Windows to try and connect to the internet. To fix this I went into the properties of the adapter and increased the metric to my liking, as shown below:
Windows then used the old wireless connection for the internet yet I could still connect to the new router using it's IP.
